The St. Mary’s Gaels advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the 2010 NCAA Tournament largely thanks to the efforts of one big man, Omar Samhan, who has had enormous games against Richmond and Villanova, respectively.

On Saturday night in Providence, Rhode Island, Samhan played perhaps the best game of his life, scoring 32 points on 13 of 16 shots made from the field. To boot, Samhan added 7 rebounds and 2 blocks, while getting only 3 fouls total.

The 6 foot 10 inch Center averaged 21.2 points per game and 11 rebounds per game for the Gaels during the regular season, but has stepped up his game even further during the NCAA Tournament.

In his team’s first round game against Richmond, Samhan had 29 points and 12 rebounds, shooting a blistering 11 for 16 from the field. In total, he has made some 24 of the 32 shots he has taken in the NCAA Tournament, netting a whopping 75% average.

After St. Mary’s victory over 2nd-seeded Villanova in the second round, Samhan still couldn’t believe what his team had accomplished thanks to his herculean efforts. As he headed back to the locker room, Samhan exclaimed “”Did it really happen? We won? For real?”

Yes, the St. Mary’s Gaels really won to go to the Sweet Sixteen, and their big man Omar Samhan is definitely for real.
